The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Cert. 18, out 16 November)

Gunnar Hansen, Edwin Neal, Marilyn Burns, dir. Tobe Hooper, 1974, cert. 18

Tobe Hooper's classic celebrates its 35th anniversary in style this year with a 'Seriously Ultimate Edition' Blu-Ray release. All HD transfers are not made equal but this one hails directly from the 16mm ECO camera originals, with a new 5.1 and stereo mix in addition to the restored mono original audio track - the result is bloody brilliant, pun intended. The disc is packed full of bonus content - interviews, outtakes, deleted scenes, 2 commentaries and a tour of the house hosted by Leatherface / Gunnar Hansen. Loosely based on Ed Gein, the serial killer who also inspired Hitchcock's Psycho, "TCSM" is one sick puppy of a film and was banned on its theatrical release. This Blu-Ray edition will hopefully go some length in putting the record straight - TCSM is not just bloody, it's a bloody good film, too.

Rome The Complete Collection (Cert. 18, out 16 November)

James Purefoy, Polly Walker, Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, CiarĂ n Hinds, 2005, cert.18

Rome was all the rage at the office water cooler when first broadcast, its mixture of costume drama, sex and violence sending the 2005 BBC ratings skywards. Rome, which was in fact co-produced by the BBC, takes us back to 52BC: the Republic is 400 years old, Julius Cesar is at the helm and one million people in the most prosperous, powerful city of the Ancient world are indulging in all sorts. Plots, sex, corruption, excesses, the last days of the Republic are portrayed through the lives of ordinary citizens and illustrious ones. The lavish production looks every bit the business in high definition, and will no doubt feature high on Christmas lists. It's out on Blu-Ray for the first time as a complete edition, featuring all 22 episodes of seasons 1 & 2 across 6 discs, as well as plenty of bonus materials including 13 commentaries and 9 featurettes.

Gone With The Wind (Cert. PG, out 16 November)

Clark Gable, Evelyn Keyes, Ann Rutherford, Harry Davenport, dir. George Cukor / Victor Fleming / Sam Wood, 1939, cert. PG

The classic Hollywood masterpiece is given the hi-def anniversary edition treatment. Watching Atlanta burn on Blu-Ray is quite a sight. The picture looks so crisp in its Technicolor glory that one cannot help but wonder if they'll ever look as good as this when they turn 70. Warner Brothers studios certainly did not skimp on this 70th Anniversary edition of one of their crown jewels: in addition to a perfectly restored picture and sound, there is a second disc to behold, full of superb bonus materials. The resulting set is a beautiful and essential addition to all serious film lovers Blu-Ray collection. Some may already have shelled out for the DVD version released earlier in the year, but if you were bidding your time this is your chance to pick up a piece of of Hollywood history for your collection. Frankly, my dears, you should give a damn!
