Gremlins (Cert. 15, out 19 October)

Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, dir. Joe Dante, 1984,  cert. 15

Gremlins is one of the films that defined the 1980s. This newly released Blu Ray version adds little in terms of bonus materials - though the original trailers are quite a treat to watch - but makes up for it with good picture quality. The film was released 25 years ago but looks fresh as a daisy. Thankfully the special effects stood the test of time and the little critters gain a lot of clarity from the HD treatment. The team behind the project add to its pedigree: writer Chris Columbus went on to direct the first 2 Harry Potter films while executive producer Steven Spielberg needs no introduction. A quality HD release for a great picture.

Friday The 13th (Cert. 18, out 19 October)

Kevin Bacon, Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, dir. Sean S. Cunningham, 1980, cert. 18

If you like to scare yourself silly, then watch this film on a dark, stormy night while staying in an isolated wood cabin. Do be extra careful if you are a horny teenager and just had sex out of wedlock as this makes your chances of making it to morning slim at best! 29 years after the film first scared and shocked audiences in the theatres you can now rediscover it in glorious hi-def. The camera stalks its preys with a creepy soundtrack to boot, guaranteed to have you at the edge of your seat til the end credits roll. The crisp transfer and superlative amount of bonus materials included make this Blu-Ray a must-own for all fans of the genre.

Ghost Ship (Cert. 18, out 19 October)

Julianna Margulies, Ron Eldard, Gabriel Byrne, Desmond Harrington, Isaiah Washington, dir. Steve Beck, 2002, cert.18

While not the best example in the terror at sea or haunted mansion genres, Ghost Ship will make you think twice about checking out seemingly abandoned old cruise ships on a salvage mission in the arctic. The ship in question went through a rather comical slashing episode a few years prior, and is obviously haunted - hence the title. So far, so good. When the crew gets on board expecting untold riches they get rather more than they bargained for. Strange things start to happen, and soon it gets pretty awry. Ghost Ship is served by a decent story, talent cast and strong special effects. It looks rather gorgeous too in a haunting, creepy kind of way, and benefits from the hi-def treatment.
