MonkeyScore: 69% The film versions of cult television shows is definitely a hit and miss affair. Think of Charlie's Angels or Starsky & Hutch as 'hit', while we would put Miami Vice firmly in the 'miss'. The A-Team somehow manages to navigate murky in-between waters, being neither a complete car crash nor a roaring success. The story, for starters, is very familiar - especially if you saw The Losers earlier this year. Now we could debate as to who claimed the rogue squad territory first, Losers or A-Team, but it would be pointless: unless you're of an age to have watched the original A-Team on Saturdays back in the day, you'll be unlikely to care (and just as unlikely to be the target audience for this film.) So Losers 1, A-Team 0 on the story front. While the teamsters in both pictures pull off their parts nicely, The A-Team doesn't quite pull it when it comes to the leader. Liam Neeson plays Hannibal as a caricature of the late great George Peppard. We just didn't buy it. Bradley Cooper as Faceman? Yep, absolutely. Quinton Jackson as B.A. and Sharlto Copley as Murdock? Just about. Neeson's Hannibal, however, lets the team down. We loved Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Clay in the Losers, and were hoping for a similar performance from the talented Neeson. Unfortunately, whether this stemmed from Joe Carnahan's direction, Neeson's own or the script, it didn't work for us. Shame, as the rest is just as fun and silly as you remember it from the eighties, with a glossier picture. |
