The Simpsons - Season 12 (Cert. 12, out 28 September 2009)

What it's about:

Season 12 originally broadcast late 2000 / early 2001 in the US. It features classic episodes like A Tale Of Two Springfields and New Kids On The Blecch, where Bart and the gang become a manufactured boys band with a hidden message. Guest stars, in no particular order and missing a few: Andre Agassi, Jay Mohr, Ed Norton, The Who, Robbie Krieger (The Doors), Frank Muniz, Venus and Serena Williams, Michael Keaton, NSYNC etc.

What MovieMonkeys thought:

Season 12 is absolute Simpsons vintage. The season opener, Treehouse of Horror XI, starts with Homer dying after eating broccoli and ends with Night of the Dolphin in which Lisa learns that no good deed shall remain unpunished! A cracker of an episode that set the tone for a great season indeed. From getting The Who to play a benefit for one half of Springfield in the series 250th episode to the classic Lisa The Tree Hugger and New Kids on The Blecch, Season 12 has the storylines and the guest stars that we've come to expect year in year out from the world's longest running TV sitcom. Flanders and Apu get their usual side stories, while Comic Book Guy gets a chance to shine in his very own featurette simply entitled #Comic Book Guy: Best. Moments. Ever."  Springfield's finest are all present, including a spooky visit from Kelsey Grammer who returns as Sideshow Bob in Day of The Jackanapes. Season 12 is chock-full of classic episodes. A must have for all self-respecting Simpsons fans!

THE RUNNERS-UP:

Rome The Complete Collection (Cert. 18, out 16 November)

James Purefoy, Polly Walker, Kevin McKidd, Ray Stevenson, Ciaràn Hinds, 2005, cert.18

Monkey Score: 85%

Rome was all the rage at the office water cooler when first broadcast, its mixture of costume drama, sex and violence sending the 2005 BBC ratings skywards. Rome, which was in fact co-produced by the BBC, takes us back to 52BC: the Republic is 400 years old, Julius Cesar is at the helm and one million people in the most prosperous, powerful city of the Ancient world are indulging in all sorts. Plots, sex, corruption, excesses, the last days of the Republic are portrayed through the lives of ordinary citizens and illustrious ones. It's out on Blu-Ray for the first time as a complete edition, featuring all 22 episodes of seasons 1 & 2 across 6 discs, as well as plenty of bonus materials including 13 commentaries and 9 featurettes. The lavish production looks every bit the business in high definition, and will no doubt feature high on Christmas lists.

24 - COMPLETE SEASON 7 on Blu-Ray

Kiefer Sutherland, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carlos Bernard, Annie Wersching, Cherry Jones, James Morrison, Jeffrey Nordling, Janeane Garofalo, Rhys Coiro, Colm Feore, Bob Gunton, Cert. 15

Monkey Score: 88%

Former CTU Jack Bauer is more than ever the man to save the day. Season 7 is a truly special vintage. We've moved to the East Coast to pick up with Bauer (Sutherland) as he is hauled out of a Senate subcommittee. The FBI need him to deal with a security situation that has Washington D.C. as its main target.  With more plot surprises, adrenaline-fueled action and political intrigue than you could shake a stick at 24 season 7 starts with a bang and sustains the excitement in real time all the way to an explosive finale. 24 Season 7 is out now on DVD, but more exciting even, it is also available on Blu-Ray - for the first time. This is as good as it gets and will make you beg for more, which is catered for with the addition of 14 Deleted Scenes, a UK-created featurette – ‘24 in 24’ (not on US version) -, behind the scenes footage, production details and 12 Audio Commentaries. So addictive it should come with a health warning.
